What's in a Name The eastern Mediterranean is home to Murex Brandaris - the purple snail, or KINAHU" as it was known in an early language of the region. In ancient times, Murex Brandaris was famous and sought after for its purple secretion, found to be an ideal dye for fabrics. As legend has it, purple became known as the colour of kings as literally thousands of snails were needed to dye a single garment. In time, the name of the region was derived from KINAHU" and became known as Canaan, the promised land.
